As an active international collaborator, pianist Xiao-Tang Tan has performed throughout France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Morocco and numerous major cities throughout China, including appearances at famous venues such as the Sydney Opera House and the China National Center for the Performing Arts. He has performed with major orchestras around the world, including the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Japan Philharmonic, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Sendai Philharmonic, the Morocco Philharmonic, the China National Symphony, the Shanghai Philharmonic and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Xiao-Tang Tan has participated in numerous international music festivals and large-scale musical events. He has made solo and chamber music appearances at the Ravel and the Du Pays Briard festivals of France and the Sendai Classical Music Festival of Japan. Tan has also made radio and television appearances and recordings, including Radio France, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Nippon Television, China Central Television and China Central Radio.
Xiao-Tang Tan was born in Beijing in 1979, and started his formal piano studies at the age of 5. Subsequently, he attended the China Central Conservatory of Music, the Munich Conservatory, L’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris earning a Master’s Degree and a performance certificate. He has studied with the well-known Chinese piano pedagogue Professor Ling Yuan and Professor Yang Jun, as well as the world-renowned pianists Gerhard Oppitz and Marian Rybicki.
In 2002, he was awarded first prize in China’s most prestigious piano competition, the Golden Bell Award Piano Competition. In 2004, he received first prize in the piano section at 2nd Sendai International Music Competition, and in the same competition received a prize of honor from the French Ambassador and an audience special mention. During this high-level international competition, he won the admiration of the audience and judges with his impressive technique and his excellent orchestral performance ability. In December 2005， he received first prize and an audience special mention in the Animato International Youth Piano Competition in Paris, France. In 2008, Xiao-Tang Tan had the honor of recording the piano parts for the theme songs of the Beijing Olympics, “You and Me” and “Five Ring Flag”.
